THE former prime minister is copping a lot of flak for his latest comments, including from his own colleagues. But one expert said he made a lot of sense. CUTTING immigration into Australia may improve living standards and housing affordability for residents but there are also trade-offs that need to be considered. Former Prime Minister Tony Abbott has called for Australia to drastically reduce immigration levels from 190,000 to 110,000 people a year. “My issue is not immigration; it’s the rate of immigration at a time of stagnant wages, clogged infrastructure, soaring house… Далее
Government plans to privatise the visa application system could include “premium services for high-value applicants”, different access for those able to pay more, as well as “commercial value-added services”. The Community and Public Sector Union has warned the changes – the department’s preferred option is to have all visa applications decided via an online platform – could cost up to 3,000 jobs and jeopardise the security of people’s private information. The home affairs minister, Peter Dutton, has said the proposal’s rationale is to modernise Australia’s visa… Далее
Home affairs minister says some Australia cities ‘overcrowded’ and migrants who are ‘going to be a burden’ should be rejected Peter Dutton has said Australia must reduce its intake of migrants “where we believe it’s in our national interest”. The home affairs minister told 2GB Radio on Thursday the Coalition had already “considerably” reduced the number of people entering Australia – by 100,000 on the levels when Labor was in government – and was not tied to the current level of migration. Dutton said it was a “perfectly legitimate argument” that… Далее

The… Далее
The PM just brought the country's biggest security and intelligence agencies together to form one super portfolio and put Peter Dutton in charge. It's a whole lot of politics but it's also a pretty dramatic restructure that changes who is responsible for ASIO and the AFP. It means one minister is responsible for those agencies as well as the Australian Border Force but the Government says it won't be a US-style department of homeland security. These are separate departments being reorganised under a new cabinet position: the Home Affairs Minister. For the first time, Australia… Далее

The Senate has torpedoed tough new regulations which stripped away visas from migrants who provided false or misleading information on their application forms. A Greens disallowance motion passed the upper house on Tuesday 31-29, with the support of Labor and the Nick Xenophon Team senators, repealing the regulations which also covered mistakes on applications. Under the regulations, anyone who submitted false or misleading material as part of a visa application - even unwittingly - faced being effectively barred from making a new application for 10 years. The previous penalty was… Далее
